CEL Joint School Teacher Development Day 2020

For the third consecutive year, we participated in The Catalyst Education Laboratory (CEL) Joint School Teacher Development Day, which was held last Friday 30 October 2020. Owing to the prevailing pandemic, the half-day programme was conducted online via Zoom.

The professional development day, entitled ‘Change and Constancy’, began with sharing by teachers from the CEL participating schools. The teachers had previously attended the J-Wel Program at the Abdul Latif Jameel World Education Lab at MIT, USA.

Two of our teachers, Ms Flora Wong, Head of History, and Ms Chloe Lo, from the Integrated Science Department, were also involved. They presented to the online audience some of the ways they incorporated the insights they gained from the J-Wel programme into their classroom teaching.

The highlights of the programme were the speeches by the keynote speakers, Professor Kai-ming Chang and Professor Justin Reich. Professor Chang is Professor Emeritus at the University of Hong Kong and he spoke on how teachers can adapt to the changes brought by the new normal. Professor Reich is an Assistant Professor in the Comparative Media Studies/ Writing Department at MIT. He explained how teachers can embrace opportunities for change in the age of technology.

The event also featured 15 breakout workshops catering to the different professional interests of the participating teachers. One of the workshops, ‘Collaboration in the Teaching and Learning of English: Challenges and Opportunities”, was conducted by three of our English teachers: Mr. David Chan, Head of English, Ms. Koko Kou and Mr. Roger Lo.

We greatly appreciate the CEL for organizing another successful teacher development day for the College, as our teaching staff greatly benefitted from the keynote speeches and from the interflow of ideas during the workshops .
